The Psychology of the Capacity to Know and to Love

A new therapeutic and educational theory in helping overcome violence and racism

The Psychology of the Capacity to Know and to Love—which has been developed in the Academy in thirty years of research—is based on a well-defined model of the soul and the recognition that man is a being of infinite positive potential, subject to education and training. The Psychology of the Capacity to Know and to Love emphasises the basic significance of the vital aspect of love in all fields of life and the importance of strengthening human relationships and of developing the joy of learning. It identifies factors that contribute to triggering destructive behaviour. These factors have one common source, the human ego, which is difficult to surmount and the Psychology of the Capacity to Know and to Love offers effective help in subordinating the ego. This approach emphasises unity in diversity, human values and developing the ability to relate to others in a spirit of friendship and service. Students of this theory—adults and children alike—develop a positive and strong-spirited attitude towards overcoming problems in a constructive way.

Assad Ghaemmaghami, founder and director of the International Academy for Human Sciences and Culture, studied psychology, education and history of religion at the University of Zurich where he received his doctoral degree. He is a psychotherapist and training analyst and is the founder of the Psychology of the Capacity to Know and to Love.

Logo

The logo of the International Academy for Human Sciences and Culture depicts the earth globe held aloft within an all encompassing and protecting heart, which through the vision and hope of a child is hoisted into the sky, symbolising the spirit and reality of Love. The meridians and parallels represent a connective net of relationship that embraces the globe, symbolising the reality of the world as one in body and spirit.

The goal of the Academy is to promote the ability to think with love and to love with intelligence, the capacity to relate to others sincerely and to contribute to a society that is just and humane so that the vision expressed in the logo increasingly becomes a social reality and in the interest of the children of the world we can rise to meet the challenges of our times and establish an environment of peace, security and friendship in which to live, to learn and to grow is a joy.

Statement on behalf of the International Academy for Human Sciences and Culture

For many years we have had insight into the numerous activities of the International Academy for Human Sciences and Culture, which with its scientific and humanitarian commitment in the region has made a name for itself nationally and internationally. Also the International Seminars of the Academy in cooperation with the Center for International Development and Conflict Management of the University of Maryland, USA are a significant contribution to our region – scientifically, culturally and economically.

At the International Academy with its two Institutes – the Psychology Institute for Peace Research and Peace Education and the Psychology Counselling and Research Institute for Sexuality, Marriage and the Family – many in search of counsel have been familiarised with the Psychology of the Capacity to Know and to Love and have found in this theory effective ways to develop personal and professional abilities. Numerous students from home and abroad have acquired here a psychological and educational means of positive action.

The humanitarian work of the Academy is furthered by two non-profit organisations – the Support Society for the International Academy for Human Sciences and Culture and the International Society for Justice, Human Rights, Professional Honour and Honour of Office. These organisations are dedicated to human rights and make an important contribution to integrity and justice, and to a humane and peaceful society.

We are pleased that the Academy has its seat in Walenstadt and that the professionally competent work of the director, Dr. Assad Ghaemmaghami, and his co-workers is contributing to the advancement of people everywhere. Their efforts have a positive impact in our region, in our canton, in Switzerland and abroad.

Because the Academy – by the goals it strives for and realises – upholds human dignity and human rights and because it furthers these in its scientific and cultural programs, as well as through social projects, we want to assure the International Academy for Human Sciences and Culture, by this statement, of our full recognition and support and wish it further success for its valuable work.
